Rock music has long since been characterized by 4/4 time with heavy emphasis on beat numbers 2 and 4. This means that the division of the beats is a repeating sequence of 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4 etc…
However, in the true spirit of rock and roll rebellion a lot of bands have defied this “rule” with massively successful songs with odd beat divisions (aka odd meter or odd time signatures) of 5/4 (1 2 3 4 5), 7/4 (1 2 3 4 5 6 7) and even mixed meter time signatures like 1 2 3 4 and 1 2 3 as an example.
Have I confused you yet? LOL!
Don’t worry. Because on this week’s Loudini Rock & Roll Circus podcast we will explain it all as we tell you about 10 bands who released massively successful songs with odd time signatures.
